SUMMARY
Mozaic is a platform that helps people explore what's around them through an interactive, AR labeled map of nearby hot spots.
ROLE + TEAM
I partnered with a full stack developer to bring this project to life. I took care of all the design aspects from UX and UI design to Prototyping and interaction simulation.

RESEARCH PROCESS
MARKET RESEARCH
I've always been bothered by large chain retailers overtaking small and local businesses and wanted to design a solution.
I hypothesized that most people choose convenience at large retailers due to the risk going outside of what they know and thus breaking their routines. I dove into research surrounding gentrification and routines to see if I could glean something actionable.
Through primary sources, I found that rising land values and larger retailers are pricing out smaller shops around the country, and also discovered that most people (80%) find themselves stuck in a routine that they don't necessarily enjoy.

USER JOURNEY MAP
Following research, I created a user journey map to illustrate where Mozaic could innovate.
I believed that if people had contextualized information about what's around them, they'd leverage this information to make decisions about where to head to next and potentially opt to trying out smaller businesses and breaking their routines.
USER PERSONAS
After creating the user journey, I developed user personas to contextualize Mozaic's user base.
Gina is always traveling and frequently finds herself in situations where she's unfamiliar with her surroundings.
Steven prefers to stay more locally, but he still loves checking out new neighborhoods to find the hidden gems.
DESIGN PROCESS
USER FLOW
I put together a userflow for this app with the idea of it being centrally organized around the home screen and the business cards for the neighborhood spots. Below is an example of a location card flow.
WIREFRAMES + MOCKUPS
After completing the user flow, I created wireframes in Sketch and through multiple design iterations and user testing brought them up to HiFi mockups.
UI INSPIRATION
I wanted this app to be a complement to the physical world and not a supplement for it, so I pulled color inspiration from nature.
After user testing, I bumped up the saturation of these colors based on feedback, leading to more of an exciting color pop.

USER TESTING
INITIAL USER TESTING
I conducted 12 user tests on usertesting.com that evaluated three of the app's main flows. Below are some of the tasks the participants were asked to complete.
USER TESTING RESULTS
The user tests also got a pulse on people's overall opinions of Mozaic. They also provided valuable feedback for some of its shortcomings such as the initial color scheme and some nav suggestions.
